The third day is the longest and the most challenging stage of our itinerary. From Equi Terme, a charming village in the heart of the Apuan Alps Regional Park, we will reach Passo dei Casoni (Casoni Pass), in the Tuscan Ligurian Apennines. After having left Equi, we follow the flow of the Aulella stream as far as Colognola. From there, we go up towards Viano village, with its beautiful church from where we can enjoy a view of the Apuan Alps. From Viano, we go up through Cecina, Bardine and Marciaso and then we go down towards the old town of Fosdinovo, which has received an orange flag from the Italian Touring club and is famous for the Malaspina Castle. We continue towards Ponzanello and then Aulla, an important place on the Via Francigena where we can visit the San Caprasio Abbey and the Brunella Fortress. From Aulla, we use the cycle lane of Via Francigena, which flanks the main road until the Malaspina Castle in Terrarossa. Here, we cross the Magra river and go up towards Novegigola and then Passo dei Casoni (Casoni Pass), our destination. The panorama is wonderful: from the peaks of the Apuan Alps, today’s starting point, as far as the Gulf of the Poets and the Tyrrhenian Sea.
