Gli orti di via Elisa is one of LuniHolidays’ favourite restaurants in Lucca having been recommended to us by some American friends about 10 years ago. It is not as expensive or touristy as many of the other restaurants in Lucca. This is (more or less) what they say about themselves:-

In the historic centre of Lucca, just a few steps from Porta Elisa, the trattoria pizzeria “Gli Orti di via Elisa” has been in existence for more than twenty years. It is at the heart of Lucca’s most interesting artistic and cultural sites, such as the Villa Bottini, the San Micheletto complex and the Gate of San Gervasio and Protasio and the Guinigi Tower.

Gli Orti di via Elisa is also the regular haunt of important sports personalities, such as footballers, cyclists and racing-drivers. This is thanks to its informal but punctual service and to its simple, genuine and traditional style of cooking.

The house menu is extensive and the following dishes definitely should not be missed: the risotto of the day, farro (spelt) cooked in Garfagnana style, including farro and bean soup(delicious on a winter’s day, with a drop of good olive oil on the top); young goat kebabs, and roasted salt cod with chick-peas. An elegant veranda can be reserved for private dinners. They welcome groups and parties to whom they offer a typical local menu, or a selection of pizzas cooked in our wood-oven with a choice of topping to satisfy all tastes. Our own group of holidaymakers enjoyed this treatment last year when we spent a couple of hours over lunch in between exhausting bouts of shopping and sigh-seeing.
