Golf in Tuscany

Golf in Tuscany is one of life's joys. The mild climate, the naturally varied ground and spectacular landscape combine to create a golfing experience that is always a pleasure and often challenging. In Tuscany you can play in all seasons and the clubs are regularly open all year. The choice of venue is varied, from the wonderful country club in Punta Ala to the supreme course of Ugolino, located at the gates of Florence on the Chianti hills. Many courses are in or near tourist resorts some, but not all, near the sea.

You will notice that many courses also have swimming pools, tennis courts etc. and would make a wonderful venue for a family day out. ELBA GOLF CLUB DELL' ACQUABONA

Elba is the biggest island in the Tuscan Archipelago and boasts a mild Mediterranean climate all year round. Developed as a tourist resort, Elba offers marvellous views over the sea and the rocky shore. Acquabona is one of the favourite golf courses, particularly for golfers from Northern Italy, who often spend their winter weekends at Acquabona to keep fit.

This is a 9-hole over 2572 metres among hills covered with tall trees; the course is of medium level difficulty, particularly for players who do not have long drives. An example is hole 1 (one par 4 of 388 metres) and hole 3 (one par 4 of 295 metres, which is rather difficult considering its quite short length).

GOLF CLUB CASENTINO

The wide valley of Casentino with its marvellous surroundings of castles, Romanesque parishes, and old monasteries such as the ones of Camaldoli and La Verna, rises to a height of 500 m above sea level and is surrounded by forests typical of the Tuscan landscape. The course is pleasantly undulating and covered with a wide variety of vegetation. The course was created in 1987 by the two architects Brami and Baracchi. The course is a par 72 and not too long (2775 m). Consequently the player's strategy has to be to attack the greens which are well defended but not easily visible. The club house is set on the top of wide sloping terraces surrounded by woods and gives good views of much of the course.

TENUTA CASTELFALFI

The Castelfalfi Golf & Country Club proposes offers a wide range of sporting and leisure opportunities in addition to golf. Apart from the golf course (18 holes par 73) there are 3 swimming pools 4 tennis courts, horse-riding, hunting, and fishing in the lakes of the estate which is a few kilometres from Volterra and San Gimignano. The course is inside the country club estate and covers 66 hectares.

COSMOPOLITAN GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB

Only 500 metres from the sea, the Cosmopolitan golf club covers an area of 70 hectares, landscaped to be in perfect harmony with the surrounding area. The design by Davide Mezzacane, in 1992, followed the traditions of the Scottish links. The dunes, the lakes and the sand, the fairways and the rough combine to form a lovely 18 hole , par 72 course.. As the course is very near the sea, it is often windy; however the mild climate makes this an attractive course to play all the year round.

MONTECATINI GOLF CLUB

The Montecatini golf course is set in the splendid surroundings of the Tuscan hills; the course has really highlighted the natural beauty of the place without damaging it. This is an 18-hole course where the designer has been able to integrate the natural obstacles (lakes, streams, woods, ditches) with the undulation of the ground to create an amazing course. Numerous dog-legs and some sloping greens will make demands of players at all levels. The high quality of the course is due to the excellent maintenance carried on in the last 9 years and will satisfy even the most demanding players' expectations.

LE PAVONIERE GOLF CLUB

The Pavoniere golf club is 3 km far from Prato, the old industrial and manufacturing centre near Florence. Prato is the seat of one of the most important Italian museum of contemporary art: Fondazione Pecci, which periodically houses exhibitions of the main modern arts. Prato is set on the plain where the Arno river flows and where the highway links Florence to the Thyrrenian coast line and to Versilia. The course is slightly undulating and is surrounded by a holm-oak wood, pines and the typical Tuscan cypresses. As at October 2002 there are 6 holes playable on the course which will be completely transformed in accordance with the design of the American Champion Arnold Palmer. During the coming year the work will be finished and the course will consist of 18 holes (plus 3 executive holes)

POGGIO DEI MEDICI GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB

The club is set among the marvellous Mugello hills; it consists of 3 different courses of 9 holes, each of them par 36. The course has been designed both for players of all abilities from beginners to club championship level. Small lakes, bunkers, streams and stands of trees are all features of the course creating technical obstacles within a striking panorama. The first 9 holes, the practice area, with pitching and putting green, and the club house were opened in the spring of 1994. The club house is the "Villa di Cignano" which has been completely restored maintaining the features of the 15th century. Golf lessons are offered by professional players selected by the Italian Golf Association.

GOLF CLUB PUNTA ALA

The golf club Punta Ala opened in the spring of 1964. The 18 holes of the course were designed by the famous italian technician Giulio Cavalsani. The course, set in an area with a splendid sea view, has a length of over 6,000 metres and is par 72. The course is naturally undulating and is covered in the Meremma maquis composed of thick vegetation with ever-green trees: cluster and stone pines, cork trees, century old holm-oaks, oaks, and strawberry trees; all of which make wonderful natural obstacles. The grassland is always in perfect condition thanks to constant care as well as to the authomatic irrigation system. Many golf competitions, even at international level take place here particularly in summer.

Tirrenia is half way between Pisa and Livorno and celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1993. Thanks to the mild climate of the area, the club is open all the year round. The course is in a pine-wood and has 9 holes on a surface area of 84 hectares where you can enjoy the typical Mediterranean maquis and play one of the best and most stimulating of courses. A pleasant homely atmosphere marks the relationship among the members of the club where visitors always receive a warm welcome.

The golf Club Ugolino is in the Chianti area a few kilometers from Florence and offers vistas of exquisite beauty, owing to its green, tilled hills and to the ancient castles and farmhouses which prove the Tuscans' love of nature. The wine produced in the area is world-wide known for its high quality. The golf course consists of 18 holes in 5,728metres par 72, surrounded by the marvellous Chianti hills. 9 holes are set in an undulating land while the others are in a plain.

VERSILIA GOLF CLUB

From a technical point of view, the golf club Versilia is a par 72; it has been designed by the english John Harris assisted by Marco Croze. The course, with its appropriate tees, is suitable for beginners as well as for championship competitions. The 5,878 metre, 18 hole course covers an area of 53 hectares. All the holes are near the putting green and the driving range and the course has features unusual in Italy but very common in the USA, particularly in the south as in Florida. The large area of water and the trees along the course creates a pleasant natural environment.

ESSE GOLF CLUB

The golf club extends among a series of hillocks in the heart of Val di Chiana, one of the most fertile areas in the south of Tuscany. The club, which was founded in 1993 as a promotional course, is now a member of the Italian Golf Association. The course consists of a practice area, a wide putting green and 3 holes with double starting lines; a locker room and refreshment-room. The major difficulties of the course derive from the small greens which are defended by bunkers and water obstacles.

The Golf Club Fontevivo is in the outskirts of San Miniato, an old small town with important Romanesque and renaissance monuments. You can reach it from the highway Firenze-Pisa going out at San Miniato and following the road signs to Fontevivo Tennis and Golf. Apart from the course with 9 holes there is a driving range, tennis courts, a bar and a restaurant which specializes in fish dishes.

The Garfagnana Golf Club is set in charming scenery that ranges over the Garfagnana and the highest peaks of the Apuan Alps. The hilly landscape with light undulations has resulted in a design in keeping with the natural environment. The 4 holes, at short distances one from the other, together with the obstacles (lakes and bunkers ) offer a wide range of opportunities for any kind of players. The club joined the Italian Golf Association in 1994, it has a practice area, a large putting green, 4 holes each par 3, a changing-room and a comfortable club house.

The Hermitage Golf Club is set in a splendid environment, near one of the most beautiful beaches in Elba Island, the "Baia della Biodola". The land gradually slopes down from 60 metres towards the sea; in the lower part of the course, there are two artificial lakes, the bigger one is close to the practice area. At the moment there are 6 holes but 3 holes will be completed in a short time. A few meters from the course, the visitors may find two "4 crowns hotels" Biodola and Hermitage. In the area there are numerous sport facilities: 8 tennis courts, 2 bowling grounds, a volley-ball ground, a foot-ball ground and 3 swimming pools.

A marvellous oasis with a surface area over 60 hectares, the charming Tuscan hills, the old farmhouses of Chianti area, are the splendid frame to the new golf course which is being built just outside Siena. The Golf Club Le Segalaie is near the airport of Ampugnano. When completed the course will include 18 holes, a practice area, a club house made out of a 17th century farmhouse, a swimming-pool and tennis courts. Visitors may play individually with professional players or in teams.
